What you're in for
The expressiveness, the excitement and the glamour of the visual and performing arts have great appeal, especially when you’re young and if you’re talented. This field contains a wonderful array of course options, not only in the visual and performing arts, but also in technical fields associated with artistic production, and others that utilise advanced technology, like multimedia, digital and graphic design.
The recent ‘rebrand’ of creative arts as the ‘creative industries’ in some educational institutions has led to a shift in the profile of the field. Where the arts used to be confined to museums and galleries, there is now talk of the ‘creative economy’ driving all types of business and organisations. This not only reflects the fact that, thanks to the digital medium, more artists now work in corporations, as well as studios. In fact, some figures suggest that around 70 per cent of those qualified in creative arts work outside specialist creative organisations. But it also reflects a new appreciation of the arts as a potential export industry, following the high profile growth in Australia’s popularity as a film production centre, and the internationally-renowned success of many artists, including actors, animators and authors.
So, where do you go to become an animator, graphic designer or photographer, opera singer, or circus performer? Universities are one option. However, universities have not always been the traditional stomping ground of visual and performing art. Some have or have inherited or incorporates specialist colleges of art or performing art, which date back many years now. Whether they are called faculties or affiliates, some of these specialist schools are among the most prestigious faculties in the country, whether for budding visual arts (drawing, pottery, photography), dramatic artists or the musical elite.
But this is also one of the fields in which small, specialist private providers are often the brightest stars in the education galaxy! Some may be difficult to enter but a general rule is that the harder it is to get into, the more chance you will have of pursuing your ambition. Most people in the visual and performing arts industry work in backstage roles ranging from film design and sound production to administration, so there are courses of this nature too. If you’re concerned about a job and a secure future, you might consider something like graphic design which, while artistic in itself, still allows you the chance to work outside the arts in business or private firms.
This is not a field where you’re in lectures all day long; the physical infrastructure, human resources and opportunities to exhibit and perform are going to be vital. Make sure you check out what’s on offer. There should be performances, as well as studio and gallery visits. Some specialist institutions even have their own resident artists and galleries, immersing and nurturing students within a real artistic community.
Entry to some courses in this field is highly competitive and all courses involving performance or production require auditions and/or portfolios that display your work and talents. In many cases applications go direct to the institution rather than through the tertiary admissions centres. If you hope to do dance, make careful inquiries about the institution’s safe dance policy.
If you are interested in this field there is probably nothing else in the world that will do, but do browse through some of the specialisations in humanities and social sciences, and in education and training. It might even be worth having a look at architecture, or built environment.
For more information about careers in this field, check out the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance website, www.alliance.org.au .

Your prospects
We hope that this won’t deter you, but studying in this area is not a good way to get a job! Some figures suggest that there are only around 7000 actors and dancers, musicians and singers are another 10 000 or so, and visual artists another 10 000 around the country. We think you get the idea. It’s a small field but a very rewarding one for those who work in it. In 2006, nearly 39 per cent of university graduates from this field were looking for work. But if you’re an artistic optimist, look on the bright side, this is a two per cent improvement on the year before. Job prospects might differ between specialisations and perhaps also across different institutions, but probably not by much. Interestingly, university graduates from this field may be less satisfied with their experience overall but are happy with the quality of teaching. Around one-in-three undergraduates goes on to further study.

Creative Arts in Australia

What you can expect from postgraduate study in Creative arts

What you're in for
This is, so far as academia is concerned, one of the newer fields of study and, like other young fields, it is still finding its feet. The cultures of two powerful and long-established social institutions — the university and the world of the arts — have mixed, but sometimes uneasily. At postgraduate level there are big differences in the extent to which the various institutions demand that students both perform/practise an art or craft and analyse/comment on it. Entry requirements vary accordingly, from those defined in terms of academic qualifications to those which use performance/practice track record as the sole criterion. The quality of programs in this field is highly variable and, for many graduates, work is difficult to find. For these reasons, those contemplating further study in this field are urged to shop with particular care. If you are interested in undertaking a research degree (along with quite a high proportion of the field’s postgraduates), you probably know already which institutions have established research programs, both in the field generally and in your area in particular. Still, it is a good idea to check out potential supervisors and the level of support that postgraduate researchers receive in the department or school you are considering. This is also a field where it helps to workshop your concepts with like-minded people so you could consider where you are going to find a critical mass of research students. For information about what graduates of various institutions think of their programs and about careers and career prospects, see details below. Depending on your particular bent you might find specialisations of interest in fields like communications, or education and training.
Who does postgraduate courses in Creative arts?
Number of students: 4,831
Percent of students over 25 years: 47%
Percent of students with a prior degree: 86%
Percent of students with Non-English speaking backgrounds: 21%

Your prospects
According to the national Course Experience Questionnaire survey, those completing postgraduate programs in this field are not very satisfied overall but they do rate their teachers well. They have more difficulty finding work than any other group of graduates and the work available is poorly paid.

Inspired? You should be. This profession boasts many important achievements. And there would appear to be many more ahead. In particular, engineering and technology graduates of the next few years are tipped to be instrumental in meeting challenges related to environmental change and the technology (e.g. nuclear technology) that may be employed to generate alternative energy sources. That’s the technical side of things. But the engineering profession is also overcoming the image of being solely focused on the technical. The recently launched ‘Top 100 influential engineers list’ shows just how capable engineers are as leaders and how much impact they can and will have on meeting the challenges of the future.
However, as a prospective member of this profession, your first challenge will be to think carefully about whether you really want to be an engineer and, if so, what kind of engineer. Many courses automatically set you on a path to one specialisation, although some don’t. While some engineering specialisations focus on a certain type of technology (automotive, aerospace, biomedical, telecommunications, marine), others are concerned with adapting certain base elements or resources for myriad purposes (electrical, chemical, materials, mechanical) while another group concentrates on harvesting, developing and sustaining natural resources (environmental, agricultural, mining). The newer engineering fields — aeronautics, informatics, mechatronics, etc. — have been more popular than the older sub-disciplines in recent years. This trend may reverse, however, with industry and faculty leaders decrying shortages of qualified professionals in the more traditional engineering specialisations (civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical).
If you’re unsure of exactly where your interests lie, you should research carefully and consider the following things. Most engineering students become engineers and, what’s more, the specialisation they study is the specialisation they practise. If you do chemical engineering, odds are you’ll be a chemical engineer, not a civil or mechanical or electronics engineer. It’s not a once-and-for-all decision though, because many engineers move into other fields (especially management and, increasingly, project management and consultancy) a few years into their careers. Engineers of all persuasions can also work across different sectors and industries, offering some option for a change of scenery, but this is nevertheless a field that typically narrows down rather than opens up options.
Along with technical skills, attributes such as good oral and written communication skills, being imaginative, taking the initiative, and simply knowing how to work with others are often needed for employment, but are sometimes overlooked in engineering. Therefore it might also be wise to do a double degree — you can now do engineering and arts, or computer science, environmental science, commerce, law, or business, and so on. That keeps your options open and will help you add another dimension to your technical skill-base. But remember, there is often a difference in the cut-off scores between single and combined degrees.
Overall, engineering is fairly tough to get into compared with other fields. Mathematics, sciences (especially physics) or other recommended backgrounds are almost always required. Some engineering courses have special deals, scholarships and programs aimed at attracting female applicants who currently make up a mere 10 per cent of the workforce.
(Note: an increase in federal government funding for engineering studies was announced in the May 2007 budget. At the time of publication, it is not known whether this will result in any change in CSP rates for relevant courses.) If you are interested in the field you should also consider the options in built environment, computing and information technology, some sciences, and surveying.

What’s happening?
A new degree structure that has already been established in some fields at selected institutions has the potential to become more common in the future. The structure follows a US-style model where undergraduates enter a general ‘pre-professional’ degree (perhaps in science, applied science or technology, for engineering) and then transfer to a professional postgraduate qualification. The total number of students studying engineering reached a high in 2005 and looks like increasing in the immediate future. Several new Commonwealth Supported Places for engineering students in a range of fields will be available from 2008.

Over the years, the national Course Experience Questionnaire survey has found that university graduates in this field are often very critical of teaching standards, although it is interesting to note that many were satisfied with the generic skills gained through their study. There are big differences between courses and campuses, so make good use of the tables on these pages and do your research thoroughly. Engineers Australia believes that Australia is heading for a big shortage of engineers, which will be further exacerbated by the graduate employment opportunities that are now available in the US for Australian graduates through the recent free trade agreement. This is starting to have an impact in the job market, with demand for graduates hotting up. Fields that are unlikely to meet predicted needs in coming years include mining, mineral exploration, civil, structural and infrastructure engineering. The 2006 unemployment rate was 13 per cent, better compared to other fields. Starting salaries were very good, the average sitting at $48 463.

Engineering and Technology in Australia

What you can expect from postgraduate study in Engineering and technology

What you're in for
Engineering is a big, well-established field. At postgraduate level its familiar sub-disciplines (chemical, civil, mechanical) are now complemented by those which relate to emerging technologies, for example, biomedical, telecommunications and wireless communication. Then there are those which look at engineering in specific fields of activity and industries, such as local government, water management, air conditioning, environmental management, pulp and paper production, transport and so on. Engineers are big consumers of further education and training, and the profession has an unusually strong role in its provision. The majority of those enrolled in this field are doing coursework rather than research, typically for a professional upgrade but some choose to learn a new specialisation. This reflects the increasing mobility of engineers between organisations and areas of responsibility. It is not unusual to find engineering research/teaching centres which bring together the efforts of universities and organisations from the private sector. Note too the availability of APA (Industry) scholarships which support research students wanting to work in conjunction with industry. If you are contemplating a research degree you should not just look at research performance of the institution overall but at the activities of academics in your area of interest. Also, where relevant, consider the prevalence of interdisciplinary activity and industry links. However, with a well-established research program you are also more likely to find a critical mass of research students and better access to resources and scholarships. But as always, check out the specifics, including the strengths and weaknesses of possible supervisors. For information about what graduates of various institutions think of their programs and about careers and career prospects, see details below. Depending on where your interests lie within this broad field, you should also browse specialisations in environmental studies, architecture, built environment, computing and information systems, and surveying. If you wish to branch out from engineering into management check out business and management as well.

Those who have recently completed postgraduate coursework in this field are not very satisfied with their experience according to the national Course Experience Questionnaire. The generally accepted view, strongly pushed by the Engineers Australia, is that the economies of the future will demand more and more engineers, but currently, the market for engineering graduates is patchy. While employment prospects were below average in 2006, graduates earn first-rate salaries.
